If anyone else remembers Benetton, then you might remember the United Colors campaigns that were so ahead of their time. Today it’s normal to see diversity celebrated in major media, but back in the 80s and 90s, not so much. But Benetton embraced the beautiful differences in women of every size and shape, color and ethnicity. These ads made a huge impression on me when I was very young.
My ode to Benetton’s “United Colors.” They blazed a trail long before it was hip to do so. And today, they’re one of the only fashion brands dedicated to empowering women around the world. Today one in three women experience some form of physical or sexual violence, often by their own romantic partners. There is a very moving video that I am kind of in love with called, “WE are glad it’s a girl.” Celebrate and protect the dignity of womenhood.
